While PCOS affects at least one in seven women and causes over $ 8 billion in healthcare costs annually in the US alone, it is often misunderstood or overlooked by clinicians and policy makers. The disease has also been linked to obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, which are often life-long illnesses. PCOS affects between 5 and 20% of all women of childbearing age, depending on the diagnostic criteria used. PCOS is a common condition characterized by irregular menstrual periods, abnormal metabolism, and increased testosterone levels. The most common hormonal disorder in women of childbearing age – polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) – was estimated to cost an estimated $ 8 billion to diagnose and $ 8 billion in 2020, according to a new economic analysis published in the Endocrine Society’s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism Treatment.
